Dr. Cherian P. Kurien Date of Joining - 20/10/2020

Dr Cherian P. Kurien completed early schooling in Wynad, BA from Kerala University, MA (SW) from Indore University (MP) and PhD from Nagpur University. He has received training in Cooperation (Codey International, Canada), Participatory Evaluation (World Vision International, Singapore) and in Christian Leadership (Haggai Institute, Hawaii, USA). He was also a participant in the National Workshop on “Building Institutions of Eminence” under the aegis of the Office of Prime minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, organized by McKinsey in 2005, New Delhi.

He started his career as a Medical Social Worker at KEM Hospital, Bombay Municipal Council in 1978 and later shifted to Development Practice and worked with leading National NGOs. He then joined as a Lecturer in Social Work at MSS Institute of Social Work, Nagpur University, completed PhD (1986), and then worked with International Funding NGOs like World Vision India (WVI) and Lutheran World Relief (LWR) in the middle management level for three years and returned to his first love, academics, and joined as Reader in Social Work (1989), at Shahu Institute, Shivaji University, Kolhapur (MS) and worked there over 5 years. He then became the founder Principal of Yashwantrao Chavan Institute of Social Sciences, Satara, Shivaji University and also served as the Director of Karve Institute, University of Pune, Maharashtra.

Dr Cherian was also Professor and Head of an accredited Master’s Program in Public Health Informatics for two years, jointly offered by the University of South Florida (USF), USA and International Institute of Information Technology, Pune. He served in Maharashtra over 20 years as an Academic Administrator and Social Work Educator, out of which 10 years he served as the Principal.

He has offered consultancy services in Community Mobilization for Drinking Water and Sanitation, Capacity Building, Participatory Planning & Strengthening the Local-Self Institutions, Community Organization, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), NGO Restructuring and HR Practices and Social Research. As an IQAC consultant, he has also conducted several training programs in Outcome Based Education, Curriculum Design, Instructional Strategies, Assessment and Innovative Pedagogies for Active Learning for teachers.

Dr Cherian has travelled widely in India and has experience in participatory management and development, student-centric pedagogies and educational technologies. He has visited many countries including US, Canada, Singapore, Israel, Jordan, Egypt and recently he was in Australia on sabbatical, learning about senior care and educational practices. 

His research interests are in Social Policy and Social Change, Psychosocial Determinants of Health, Psycho-Social Interventions, Active Aging, Addictive Behaviour, Child Protection, Youth and Development, Migration, Participatory Development and Governance. He has published articles in peer reviewed national and international journals and also authored book chapters on participatory development and participatory evaluation.

In 2007, Dr Cherian joined as Director, School of Social Work, Marian College Kuttikkanam and continue with the Institution till date. He is still active in Social Research, particularly focusing on Qualitative Studies, Mixed Methodologies and Critical Reality Paradigms. He has supervised over 10 PhD scholars and five of them awarded PhD and others are in different stages of progression.
